Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes the Essex-Chester-Deep River area so special.

The Essex-Chester-Deep River area is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that the Essex-Chester-Deep River area has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The Chester Museum at The Mill is located near the center of Chester and overlooks a mill dam and the Pattaconk Brook. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from June to October and by special request. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. The museum features two exhibits that tell the story of Chester's history, including artifacts from the Waterhouse Gristmill. Handicapped access is available.
  • Essex is home to the Griswold Inn, which has been continuously operating as an inn and tavern since 1776. In addition to its historic charm, the Griswold Inn is known for its delicious food and lively entertainment, including live music and storytelling.
  • The Connecticut River Museum in Essex offers a fascinating look at the history and ecology of the Connecticut River, which has played an important role in the region's development. In addition to exhibits, the museum also offers boat tours and educational programs.
  • If you're looking for outdoor activities, the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat offers a unique way to explore the area. You can take a scenic train ride through the Connecticut River Valley and then hop on a riverboat for a cruise on the river. It's a fun and memorable way to experience the beauty of the region.
  • The Chester-Hadlyme Ferry is the second-oldest continuously operating ferry service in the United States. The ferry, which crosses the Connecticut River between Chester and Hadlyme, has been in operation since 1769.
  • Essex is home to the Connecticut River Artisans, a cooperative gallery featuring the work of local artists and craftspeople. The gallery is a great place to find unique, handmade gifts and souvenirs.
  • The Ivoryton Playhouse in Ivoryton, just a few miles from Essex, is one of the oldest continuously operating summer theaters in the United States. The playhouse has hosted many famous actors and productions over the years, and it's a great place to catch a show during the summer season.
  • The Essex Library Association, established in 1852, is one of the oldest operating libraries in the United States. The library offers a great selection of books, as well as community programs and events for all ages.
  • The Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in nearby East Haddam is a one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1750 and is now a museum. The schoolhouse is named after Nathan Hale, a famous patriot who taught at the school before joining the Revolutionary War.
  • The Chester Sunday Market is a popular outdoor market featuring local vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods and handmade crafts. It's a great place to grab a snack or pick up some souvenirs.
  • The Deep River Ancient Muster is a historic event held annually in July, featuring fife and drum corps from all over the world. The event has been held since 1885 and is a great way to experience the rich musical history of the area.
  • The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat also offers a popular holiday event, the Santa Special, where kids can ride the train with Santa and his elves and enjoy hot cocoa and treats. It's a fun and festive way to get into the holiday spirit.
