Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- The flowers are blooming the trees are budding and the temperatures are getting higher. Spring is officially here and that means the Deep River Parks and Recreation famed Fishing Derby is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 7. Anglers ages 5-15 are welcome to come and try their luck at catching a prized rainbow trout! Register online now or register the day of the derby. (Facebook)
- There is a shift in waste management in Connecticut, as the state moves ahead with plans to close Hartford’s aging MIRA plant and shut down its incinerator later this year. Trash in the tri-town areas wouldn't be affected that much. Things will remain pretty much the same but for how long, no one knows. According to the article in the CT Examiner, Essex First Selectman Norm Needleman said Essex has opted to remain with MIRA, but would not commit to staying for five years. With the small amount of trash that comes into the town transfer station, there is a small cost for the town to bring its trash to the MIRA transfer station just a few hundred feet away. If the town paid to truck it somewhere else, that would be a different story, Needelman said. “It didn’t make sense for us to jump out at this point,” Needleman said. (CT Examiner)
- Beatles fans take note; Ringo Star is coming to the Nutmeg State! The iconic rock musician will help kick off the new Sound On Sound music festival, which will be held in Bridgeport on September 23 at the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater. (Patch)
