Here are the top three stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- Walking is good for the mind, body and soul, so why not join the Essex Historical Society for the Ivoryton Walking Tour on Sunday, August 14 at 6 p.m? Learn about the rich history of Ivoryton, the story of the Comstock, Cheney & Co. and its development as a ‘factory town’ and employer of newly arrived immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe. The tour will be led by historian, author and Ivoryton resident Chris Pagliuco. The cost is $5 per tour. It is free to EHS members and children, thanks to a CT Summer at the Museum grant from Connecticut Humanities. The general public and families are welcome. Hope to see you there! (Essex Historical Society)
- These aren't necessarily the most expensive homes in the Nutmeg State, but they are the largest on the board, each holding over 14,000 square feet of living space. Check out the list to see which one of these mega mansions you'd like to buy if you could! (Patch)
- The new docks on Chester Creek at Marker 37 opened this weekend, according to a message from the town of Chester's Harbor Management Commission. Anyone coming in has to check in and talk to the marina. Hail them on Channel 9. This will be a new activity at the mouth of Chester Creek this year and may take a minute to work out the navigational kinks- both those vessels entering and exiting the Creek from the marinas and those vessels just trying to tie up to the new docks to dine at Marker 37. Please use caution and be patient, after all we are all out there to have a great time. Also, effective as of July 1, boaters going to Marker 37 are charged $10 for docking. Please remember to hail them on Channel 9 for dockage and mooring usage and directions. They need to be able to coordinate and cannot have anyone docking or tying up without our acknowledgment. Boat safely and have a great time on the river!" (Town of Chester)
From my notebook:
- Deep River Farms: "Mini eggplants, throw them on the grill! Yum! at the Farmstand." (Deep River Farms via Facebook)
- Essex Library: "Recently widowed older adults face higher poverty rates, greater housing burdens, as well as other financial challenges. Connect with local resources by using the Eldercare Locator. This online directory can help surviving spouses find out their local Area Agency on Aging and access a wide variety of services such as nutrition programs, respite care, home modifications, benefits counseling, and others." (Essex Library via Facebook)
- Essex Library: "Check out this virtual book experience at the library! Scan the QR codes in the book to bring up the virtual and augmented reality app on your smartphone and explore supplemental scenes from the book. " (Essex Library via Facebook)
- Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau: "Sunday Spotlight from Shell & Bee Studio at SoMA in Deep River: "Creators will be guided on a meditational journey within themselves to start the process of healing by using a variety of artistic mediums and ancient Indigenous knowledge to "recreate and restore" the parts of themselves that were left behind. Tri Town Youth Services has provided funding for this workshop through the M. Jones Fund. Class cost should never be a deterrent for anyone." (Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau via Facebook)
