Here are the top four stories today in Essex-Chester-Deep River:
- It's that time again in downtown Essex to celebrate the Burning of Ships, an event that happened in 1812. This year the parade to commemorate the historic event will be held on Saturday, May 14 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Essex Town Hall and proceeding down Main Street to the Connecticut River Museum. The parade is set to highlight several fife and drum corps, including the Sailing Masters of 1812 (who will be leading the parade), as well as the Chester Fife and Drum Corp., Stony Creek, the Colonial Navy of Mass., the Ancient Mariners of Connecticut and the Silver Dolphins. - Chef Colt Taylor is planning a very special Cinco de Mayo celebration. After sustaining a burst pipe and devastating flooding in January 2021, Taylor's Mexican restaurant, Los Churros Cantina is up and running complete with a new game room and bar area called CocoX, which features foosball, darts and shuffleboard.(CTExaminer)
- Mike and Amanda Tevis of Essex are hoping to return horses to the McCulloch family farm, where Morgan horses were bred for years by the former owner Mary Jean Vasiloff who started her line of Morgans with her beloved horse Duke. Vasiloff cultivated her Morgan lineage for decades and now the Tevises want to enjoy a horse-centric lifestyle on the same land and are asking to be allowed to ride the trails on the portion of the land has been sold to the town as open space. The matter has been handed over to the Old Lyme town attorney to decide what is the best course of action to allow this use of the property. (CTExaminer)
