It's not so much about the flowers as it is the accessories for prom wristlets and boutineers this year.
"Our increasing trend is toward more embellishments and fancier wristbands," "Fancy" Nancy Gardiner, designer for Hansen's Flower Shop, said.
Rhinestones, colorful beaded wristlets, gems, jewel sprigs, colored ribbons -- "it's getting a little more artistic," Gardiner said.
"We try to make it more fun for the kids," she added.
The most popular flower color for prom this year is white, Gardiner said.
After all, white goes with everything, and that's important with colorful embellishments.
"Accessories are the biggest difference this year than what we've seen in past years," Gardiner said.
She added that prom-goers seem to be following some trends seen in weddings -- like the green environmental theme that's popular now.
As far as the new wave of "bling" requested in many of Hansen's prom orders, it could have something to do with the styles featured in the new "The Great Gatsby" movie, Gardiner said.
Fairfield Ludlowe and Warde high schools will hold their junior proms on Saturday. Ludlowe's senior prom is May 31; Warde's is June 1.
Fairfield Prep's junior prom is Saturday; senior prom is May 24. Notre Dame's senior prom is Friday.
Gardiner advised those customers who pick up their prom flowers early keep them in the fridge to preserve them for the big day. The flower shop had at least 75 orders for boutineers and 75 orders for wristlets for Saturday's proms alone.
