Draft Regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan Released
Fairfield residents can review and comment on the draft through June 28.

FAIRFIELD, CT — Floods, hurricanes, thunderstorms, winter storms, and other natural hazards affect residents and businesses every year. These events damage property, cause power outages, block roads, and can cause injuries.
The Connecticut Metropolitan Council of Governments (MetroCOG), which represents the municipalities of Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull, recently released the draft update to the Regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan, available at https://bit.ly/draft-nhmp (case sensitive) and/or https://ctmetro.org/regional-planning/environmental-planning/. The public is welcomed and encouraged to review and comment on the draft Plan through Friday, June 28th, 2024.

The MetroCOG Region comprises the City of Bridgeport and the Towns of Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford and Trumbull. The Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan is a tool that increases education and awareness on natural hazards and community vulnerabilities and helps residents understand risks and take specific steps to reduce property damage, injury, and loss of life. This plan discusses the occurrence and consequences of floods, coastal changes, winter storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and tropical storms, earthquakes, dam failure, extreme temperatures, and drought. The plan identifies cost-effective mitigation strategies and actions that communities can perform to reduce risk from natural hazards. The Plan is also a requirement for certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance. This update identified changes in risks, vulnerabilities, capabilities, and mitigation actions that have developed since adoption of the previous plan in 2019.

Throughout the month of June, MetroCOG will be offering opportunities for the public to attend a Public Information Meeting where residents, businesses and stakeholders can learn about the plan, ask questions and provide input. Dates, times and locations will be forthcoming. Language assistance may be requested within a reasonable timeframe and provided at no cost to the public.
