Fairfield Celebrates Arbor Day, 'Tree City' Recognition

Fairfield celebrated its 26th Arbor Day -- and the 141st National Arbor Day -- on Saturday by planting a Norway Spruce on the Old Town Hall Green.

The tree was donated to the town by the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Chapter members dedicated the tree in memory of Annie B. Jennings, who gave Fairfield its Christmas tree through the DAR chapter, according to Chapter Regent Catherine Tymniak.

The town's Christmas tree -- planted in 1921 -- is the oldest tree used for the holiday in the state - and the new Norway Spruce will be its replacement when time comes.

"May the Annie B. tree grow tall and strong on the Old Town Hall green," Tymniak said.

Fairfield was also recognized by the state as a "Tree City USA" for the 25th year. Chris Donnelly, the state's urban for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, presented the honor.

Only a few communities in the state receive this recognition annually, according to Donnelly.

"The honor is a testament to the tremendous efforts of our residents, volunteer committees, and our tree warden," First Selectman Michael Tetreau said.
