The Fairfield Museum & History Center Seeks Volunteers

From The Fairfield Museum & History Center: The Fairfield Museum & History Center is inviting high school students and adults to become involved in the community and to share history with others through Docent and Junior Docent programs this spring. Teens and adults who enjoy history, working with people and giving back to the community are encouraged to apply.

New Docents are needed as part of the exciting revitalization of the properties behind the Fairfield Museum, the Victorian Cottage and Barn (1888) and Sun Tavern (c. 1780). In June new exhibitions featuring interactive hands-on experiences will open in those buildings on the Museum Commons on the Town Green. Adult Docents are needed to lead guided tours of the Sun Tavern and to facilitate self-guided learning. Docents are also needed in the summer to lead guided tours of the 1750 Ogden House, located at 1520 Bronson Road.

“This is the perfect time to get involved with the Fairfield Museum,” said Director of Education Christine Jewell. “Students and adults from the area can be a part of history—and share history with others—as we open these innovative new exhibitions.”

The Fairfield Museum Junior Docent Program provides opportunities for high school students to develop important public speaking and engagement skills while learning and sharing about the history of Fairfield and the region. Junior Docents will lead exhibition tours and facilitate hands-on activities in the Sun Tavern, and the Fairfield Museum exhibitions, for adults, children and families. Junior Docents will also have opportunities to volunteer at programs and events throughout the year. Students must complete an application, available for download atwww.Fairfieldhistory.org/education/docents/ and an interview. The deadline for applications is April 21, 2017 and space is limited.

Adults who want to get involved should sign up for one of the Museum’s upcoming Docent Information Sessions, also known as “Fairfield 101.” The information session will be offered on three dates: Wednesday, March 16, 10am – 12pm;Tuesday, March 21, 10am – 12pm; and Monday, March 27, 1pm – 3pm.
