Man Dies Of Apparent Gunshot Wound At Fairfield's Sasco Beach: UPDATE

FAIRFIELD, CT — A 58-year-old man died of what Fairfield police said "appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound" at Sasco Beach Tuesday afternoon.

The man, whose identity was not released by authorities, had been involved in a disturbance at about 12:30 p.m. at a home less than two miles from the beach. He left the residence and went to the beach, where the shooting occurred.

His body was soon discovered by police at the beach, and he was pronounced dead at the scene; the beach was closed to the public for several hours Tuesday during the investigation, but it has since been reopened.

"We extend our condolences to the family and thank the community for their cooperation during this investigation," wrote Fairfield Police Sgt. Michael Stahl in a statement.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death, according to Stahl.

"This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public," Stahl said. "To respect the privacy of the family, the identity of the male and the location of the residence will not be disclosed."
