Fairfield Police Probe Series of Thefts from Businesses, Cars

Several reports of shoplifting at Home Depot, a burglary at Ponte Vecchio, and thefts from cars kept police busy the last weekend of 2012.

Fairfield police are investigating a series of burglaries and thefts reported over the past weekend:

Early Saturday, police were dispatched to a burglar alarm at Ponte Vecchio Trattoria on the Brick Walk Promenade. Responding officers found that front window of the restaurant had been smashed out and approximately $100 was stolen from the register.

Home Depot reported on Friday several thefts and attempted larcenies -- all seemed to have been committed by the same suspect. Police are looking for a white male in his 50s with a gray beard and a tattoo on his neck, according to the report. He was wearing jeans and a blue and white jacket when he allegedly stole $106 worth of electrical wire on Friday.

Police believe the suspect also attempted to steal an additional $441 worth of items from the Fairfield Home Depot on Saturday and $182 worth of merchandise from the Home Depot in Stratford on Friday. He fled in a white Ford Expedition with New York plates.

Fairfield police are also looking for another suspect responsible for the theft of a generator ($700) from Home Depot. The thief was described as a white male in his 30s wearing a brown hoodie or sweater.

Two vehicles were entered over the weekend, according to the crime log. On Friday afternoon, an unlocked car parked at the Starbucks on Black Rock Turnpike was entered and a wallet was stolen from a pocketbook (which was left on the front seat). The wallet is valued at $200; Credit cards, the complainant's license, and $300 worth of cash were stolen.

A Round Hill Road resident reported Friday that his unlocked vehicle was also entered. A Brooks Brothers navy suit ($800), laptop ($800), and Calloway golf clubs ($1,300) were stolen.
