FAIRFIELD, CT — After careful consideration and in speaking with friends, family, and those in the community, RTM member and community leader, Melissa Longo, announced her candidacy for election in the 134th legislative district, which serves parts of Fairfield and Trumbull.

“We need a more effective voice in Hartford to represent our wonderful communities. We work so hard and sacrifice too much to be ignored. I will deliver the much-needed leadership and common-sense solutions that the residents of Fairfield and Trumbull deserve,” said Longo.

Hartford’s heavy-handed, one-size-fits-all policies are increasingly encroaching on our ability to live and raise our families. Issues on the local level from the outdated 8-30g law which is used by well-funded corporate developers to circumvent local zoning, to antiquated school redistricting policies that split neighborhoods up, and the endless need to make Fairfield and Trumbull residents pay higher taxes and never-ending fees while our towns receive only a fraction of those dollars back.

Melissa’s top priorities if elected would be to advocate for our local control over education, development, and utility planning, and address Connecticut’s affordability crisis and taxation.

Trumbull State Representative Dave Rutigliano (123rd District) welcomed Longo’s announcement, stating that he is excited to see Melissa's willingness to serve by taking on the challenge of running for state representative. "I look forward to positive collaboration, a partner focused on the issues that matter most to families in both Trumbull and Fairfield," Rutigliano said. "We could use positive change in the district. Melissa will bring some dynamic energy to the State House. She will be a true representation of the district, with a deep understanding of the needs of working families."

“Melissa is a fierce advocate, and wants to be your voice up in Hartford,” declared Laura Devlin, who previously held the 134th district seat for 8 years. “I have full faith and confidence in her ability to advocate and legislate. Melissa truly understands the needs of her district, and has demonstrated during her time serving on our Representative Town Meeting, that she’s a thoughtful, driven, and effective leader – qualities we desperately need representing us in Hartford.”

Melissa is a lifelong resident of Fairfield, with extended family in Trumbull. Melissa and her significant other Joe are devoted parents of two energetic girls, and their two rescue dogs.

She is currently serving her second term on Fairfield’s Representative Town Meeting, the town’s legislative body. Melissa was a successful small business owner and operator for a local health and wellness company in Westport prior to becoming a mother. She currently serves as an admissions and marketing specialist, and volunteers her time at St. Thomas Aquinas School. In addition to her family and professional priorities, Melissa is passionate about helping rescue animals and supporting local businesses.

“I am thrilled to launch our campaign, to be an unwavering voice for our community, advocating for you, and the issues you deem important, here in Fairfield and Trumbull. Over the next several months, I hope to talk to you and earn your vote on November 5th, to be your voice at our state Capitol.”
