Give the Gift of Cheese

Fairfield Cheese Company co-owner Chris Palumbo offers tips on giving the gift of cheese -- whether it be for Mother's Day or any other special (or just regular occasion).

Palumbo presented examples of cheese ranging from soft, semi-firm, to hard.

Anton's Red Love is a washed rind, soft cheese from Germany, Palumbo said.

"It's something decadent to pamper Mom," Fairfield Cheese Company co-owner Laura Downey added.

For a semi-firm cheese, there's Kinsman's Ridge, a New Hampshire cheese. It's got a bit of an earthy rind to it, Palumbo said, and it's drier than the Anton's Red Love.

Then there's the pecorino tartufo, cheese with black truffles (of the mushroom variety).

"Everybody loves truffles," Palumbo said of the hard cheese/truffle combo.

Goat cheeses are also great this time of year, Palumbo said.

"The goats' milk is particularly good in the spring," Palumbo said.

If you're interested in putting together a cheese platter for Mother's Day, Fairfield Cheese Company is open 10 am
- 7 pm Monday through Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, and closed on Sunday.

It's located next to Harry's Wine and Liquor, on the corner of Post and North Pine Creek roads.
