Man Accused of Spitting in Cop's Face During Arrest

A Fairfield man was charged with assaulting an officer early Tuesday after he allegedly spit in the officer's face.

A Department of Public Works employee plowing during the storm late Monday into Tuesday noticed a car with heavy front-end damage stopped in the middle of Saxonwood Road and notified police, according to the report.

Officers determined the car had struck a tree at some point and followed footprints leading from the vehicle to a home on Saxonwood Road. They spoke with the resident, who reportedly appeared to be intoxicated and told police he had driven home because he wanted to go sleep, police said.

The man told police he had hit a tree but wasn't sure where, according to the report. Officers attempted to arrest the man -- identified as Benjamin Carlson, 27, of Saxonwood Road -- for evading responsibility, but Carlson allegedly resisted arrest.

During the struggle, Carlson allegedly tried to kick and headbutt the officers, and then spit in one officer's face, which leading to the assault charge, Deputy Chief Chris Lyddy said.

Carlson was further charged with evading responsibility and interfering with police, according to the report. He was transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of bruises and an abrasion on his face sustained during the struggle.

Carlson's bond was set at $25,000 and he is scheduled to appear in court on March 27.
