A Bridgeport man was arrested Monday for allegedly stealing $480 worth of items from Kohl's, police said.
A Kohl's employee noticed a black male wearing a red hat, blue sweatshirt, and khakis leave the store with unpaid merchandise, according to the report. The employee told the police that the suspect got into a white vehicle with two other black males and left the parking lot.
Police spotted a similar white car and initiated a traffic stop. Officers found a man in the car that fit the description of the suspect.
All three males denied taking anything from Kohl's, but the man matching the description of the suspect had a bulge underneath his sweatshirt -- the bulge turned out to be three pairs of jeans from Kohl's, according to the report.
Police found four other pairs of Kohl's jeans in the vehicle, as well as a pair of Tim McGraw headphones and two hats, all determined to be stolen.
Officers brought the suspect back to Kohl's, where he was identified by the complainant employee as the same man who left the store with unpaid merchandise, police said.
When police asked for the suspect's name, he allegedly gave a false name and date of birth to avoid being picked up for an outstanding warrant for violation of probation, according to the report.
Police later identified the suspect as Nicholas Payne, 28, of Bridgeport. He was charged with sixth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer for Monday's incident, police said. His bond was set at $500 and his is scheduled to appear in court on April 25.
Payne was also served two outstanding warrants -- one for violation of probation by the Fairfield Police Department and another for failure to respond to an infraction in Bridgeport. His bond was set at $10,600 for those charges.
