Sacred Heart Univ. Athletics Staffer Arrested On Sex Charges: Report

FAIRFIELD, CT — A 39-year-old employee of Sacred Heart University in Fairfield was arrested by Bloomfield police this week on sex-related charges involving a minor, News 12 Connecticut and NBC Connecticut reported.

Matthew Janik, who is employed at the school as an associate director of athletic communications, was charged on Monday with four felonies:

  • Attempting to commit illegal sexual contact
  • Enticing a minor by computer
  • Attempting to commit commercial sex abuse of a minor under 15
  • Attempting to commit sexual act with a victim under 15 by a person at least 3 years older

Details of the case were not immediately available, but NBC Connecticut reported that Janik, a Seymour resident, is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 13. The investigation reportedly remains active.

In an email to Patch, a spokesperson for the university, issued the following statement:

"The Bloomfield Police Department made us aware yesterday that Matthew Janik had been arrested," the spokesperson wrote. "Upon learning of this, Janik was immediately suspended pending investigation."

Janik's profile on the Sacred Heart sports website is also no longer visible; only a "404" error message appears.
