Southport's Pequot Library Announces October Events
Highlights include the launch of the Southport Globe Onion Festival and the Annual Meeting featuring local powerhouse Courtney White.

Pequot Library presents an array of forthcoming programs for the month of October. Particular highlights include the launch of the Southport Globe Onion Festival, planned in partnership with Sefra Alexandra and the Sasquanaug Association; the Annual Meeting featuring local powerhouse Courtney White as speaker; and a Night Out with bestselling author Lian Dolan.

There’s more music to enjoy on October 8th at 2 p.m., when the Connecticut Accordion Association Orchestra appears under the direction of Peter Peluso. They’ll perform an array of musical pieces including Classical, Light Classics, Broadway, Jazz, and Movie Themes. There’s a $10.00 per person charge at the door, and children under age 12 attend for free.
The following day, on October 9th at 5 p.m., the Library, Sefra Alexandra (“The Seed Huntress”), and the Sasquanaug Association have collaborated on creating a family-friendly day of education, fun, and food in celebration of the Southport Globe Onion. Activities include a tour of onion-centric sites in Southport Harbor, Onion in Spoon races, onion ink prints, as well as special foods highlighting this ingredient.

On October 13th at 4 p.m., we offer a digital talk on how to stop being too nice and worrying about what others might think with Dr. Aziz Gazipura, a clinical psychologist and one of the world’s leading experts on social confidence. This talk is produced in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium.
Shoran Piper, Clan Mother of the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe, appears on October 15th at 2 p.m. for an afternoon program about the roots of agriculture in modern-day Fairfield. Shoran will discuss Native American agricultural practices, including the use of herbs and other plants, for medicines, teas, and oils. This talk is produced in conjunction with our exhibition The Lure of the Garden.
On October 18th at 7 p.m., join us for a digital conversation with popular CNN Anchor Zain E. Asher as she discusses her moving and inspiring memoir, Where the Children Take Us. This memoir tells the story of her mother's harrowing fight to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. This talk is presented in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium.
Take a behind-the-scenes look at the process of building our The Lure of the Garden exhibition from conception to opening on October 20th at 6 p.m., during our Out of the Vault program. Learn how the curator and creators decide which items will be on display and see featured items from the exhibition.
Our Annual Meeting will be held on October 23rd. All are welcome to attend, although only Friends of Pequot Library can vote. The business portion of the meeting runs from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., followed by a special talk with guest speaker Courtney White, former Food Network President. White is the founder and President of Butternut, a lifestyle company creating premium home and food content that connects viewers to personalities and places that inspire, inform, and entertain. She created multi-platform hits including Guy Fieri’s Tournament of Champions and Amy Schumer Learns to Cook during her time at the Food Network.
We present another digital talk in partnership with the Library Speakers Consortium on October 25th at 7 p.m., when historical fiction writer Kate Quinn discusses her newest release, The Diamond Eye, and her other works. Quinn is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code. The Diamond Eye, offers an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet bookworm who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper and is based on a true story.
Finally, on October 27th at 6 p.m., join us for a Night Out with bestselling novelist Lian Dolan. She’ll read from her captivating latest novel, Lost and Found in Paris, an escapist romp.
We also offer weekly and ongoing classes for children and adults, including a new Scrabble club on Tuesday afternoons for children in grades 3 to 8. Make sure to check the calendar on our website! We welcome all to discover treasures from our Special Collections in our latest exhibition, The Lure of the Garden, featuring materials dating back to 1500. This exhibition is on view through February 5, 2023.
