FARMINGTON, CT — With the federal government shutdown expected to jeopardize SNAP food assistance programs on Nov. 1, Farmington's food pantry has placed an urgent call.

Organizers of the Farmington Food Pantry this week kicked off a major food drive, with the community being asked to donate as much as possible in light of the shutdown.

Currently, the food pantry helps 230 Farmington families, but officials expect that to skyrocket if food assistance ceases Saturday.

Since the federal government may soon no longer help those in need, Farmington is asking its residents to lend a helping hand.

"Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, many families in Connecticut may lose access to their SNAP (food assistance) benefits starting Nov. 1," wrote the food pantry in an announcement.
