Just three days after making his Major League Baseball debut on the mound for the Seattle Mariners, left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia of Granby is on the move again, about 1,400 miles to the southeast.

On Thursday, Garcia was traded along with minor league pitcher Ashton Izzi to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, the Mariners will receive slugging first baseman Josh Naylor.

Naylor, a left-handed hitting power machine who cracked 31 home runs last season for the Cleveland Guardians, was batting .292 in his first year with Arizona, belting 11 home runs and knocking in 59 runs in 93 games. He is expected to join switch-hitting catcher Cal Raleigh, the major league home run leader, to form a potent middle of the lineup.

Arizona immediately optioned Garcia to its highest minor league affiliate, the Reno Aces of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, while Izzi was assigned to the Diamondbacks' High-A team in Hillsboro, Oregon. On Saturday, Garcia was called up to the parent club, and joined the team in Pittsburgh.

He made his National League debut Sunday, relieving starter Zac Gallen with the Diamondbacks trailing 4-0 entering the seventh inning. He walked leadoff hitter Henry Davis, but induced a Isiah Kiner-Falefa to ground into a 6-4-3 double play, then retired Spencer Horwitz on another infield groundout for a scoreless inning.

Garcia, who played at the Master's School in Simsbury, Quinnipiac University and Texas A&M University, was an 11th-round draft choice by the Mariners in 2023. Despite less than overwhelming college statistics, he was seen as a raw talent with great potential, and began blossoming in the Seattle farm system.

He began this season at Double-A Arkansas, compiling a 4-4 record and five saves in 24 relief appearances. He struck out 33 batters in 25 innings, averaging 11.8 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. He was promoted in June to Triple-A Tacoma, where he won his only decision in eight appearances, with a 2.16 earned-run average. His combined 2025 minor league totals were a 5-4 record, a 3.51 ERA, five saves and 42 strikeouts in 33.1 innings.

Garcia got the call to the big leagues on Monday, and immediately got his feet wet in a relief appearance against the Milwaukee Brewers. He yielded four hits and two runs (one earned) in his debut, then came back two days later with a scoreless ninth inning, fanning Blake Perkins for his first major league strikeout. In his two appearances in Seattle, he allowed one earned run in two innings, for a 4.50 ERA, with three walks, one strikeout and a wild pitch. He tossed 51 pitches, 29 for strikes.

His mom, Kristin, told Patch Monday, "I love that he is doing what he loves. He had a goal and worked hard to get there. I am super proud of him."
