Granby and East Granby Prepare for a Foot or More of Snow

The snow plows and salt trucks are gassed up and ready to go in both Granby and East Granby as the towns prepare for what could be up to two feet of snow between Friday and Saturday.

"We made sure that we did maintenance and preparation on all the snow plows and equipment," East Granby First Selectman James Hayden said Thursday morning.

Granby Town Manager William F. Smith Jr. said Thursday that salt will be laid down in advance of the storm.

"Nowadays we do pre-salting of the roads," he said. "It assists greatly with methods of keeping the roads open."

Both town officials said they were prepared for a foot of snow but that two feet makes roads more difficult and time consuming to clear. Both were also concerned about possible power outages related to heavy snow and wind.

"If it's a foot, we can deal with that," Hayden said. "If it's two feet, there are some concerns."

If residents lose power and need a shelter, East Granby will open the East Granby Senior Community Center. Smith said Granby would use either Town Hall or the senior center, depending on the power situation at those buildings and how many people needed shelter.

Emergency personnel are on standby in both towns.
