Motorist Charged With OUI After Clipping Pedestrian In East Granby: Police

The teen pedestrian suffered minor injuries, according to state police.

EAST GRANBY, CT — A motorist is accused of driving while impaired after clipping a teen pedestrian Thursday night, according to state police.

A 66-year-old East Granby man was charged with operating under the influence and failure to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian.

The accident happened around 7:48 p.m. on Newgate Road.

State police said the man's BMW 640xi was northbound on Newgate Road when his right side mirror struck the left wrist of the male 17-year-old.

The pedestrian, an East Granby resident, had been walking his bicycle with traffic on the right side of the roadway at the time of the collision, according to police.

His bicycle was on the roadway, while he was walking in the grass alongside it, police said. Police described the teen’s injury as minor.

The BMW also struck the bicycle’s left handle-bar, police said.

According to state police, the driver showed signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test. He is due in court on Nov. 17.

The teen was issued a written warning for not walking on the left side of the road.
