September is Senior Center Month in Granby

The Granby Board of Selectmen issued the proclamation honoring senior citizens at its meeting this week.

An official town proclamation of Senior Center Month was made at the Granby Board of Selectmen's meeting this week. The action honored both the town's senior center and its cenior citizens, recognizing the contributions both make to the town.

The Granby Senior Center "has acted as a catalyst for mobilizing the creativity, energy, vitality and commitment of the older residents of Granby," First Selectman John Adams said as he read the document.

Praise for older Americans in general began the message, as Adams called that group a notable segment of the nation's society. He said seniors help "enrich and better the lives" of younger people through the use and application of their wisdom and experience.

Another important point was the empowering effect of the senior center for the town's most experienced citizens.

"Through the wide array of services, programs and activities, senior centers empower older citizens of Granby to contribute to their own health and well-being and the health and well-being of their fellow citizens of all ages, resulting in increased participation at the senior center" Adams said.

The proclamation also points out that senior centers "affirm the dignity, self worth and independence of older persons" by drawing on their experiences, abilities and knowledge while allowing them to more easily continue their contributions to society as a whole.

The senior center month proclamation asks "all citizens to recognize the special contributions of the senior center participants, and the special efforts of the staff and volunteers who work every day to enhance the well-being of the older citizens of our community."
