Residents are asked to pile leaves near the street but off the road and sidewalks, as this can pose as a safety hazard for pedestrians and bicyclists and can negatively impact stormwater drainage.

The program is offered to half-acre or less residential properties (building zone R-20) on public roads.

Leaf Collection Guidelines for Residents

  • Place leaves as close to the edge of the street as possible without placing leaves in the road, sidewalk, catch basins or open channels.
  • Rake leaves into neat piles or place leaves into biodegradable bags. Leaves in plastic bags will not be collected.
  • Make sure there are no branches, sticks, or garden refuse in leaf piles or bagged leaves.
  • Rake early and frequently to be prepared for leaf pickup.
  • As per the State of Connecticut, General Statutes, Chapter 368m, Sec. 19a-335, Nuisances on Highways, residents must remove all residual leaf piles after the second leaf collection.

Alternative Leaf Options

  • Drop off leaves at Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility (permit required).
  • Mulch leaves and leave them in place. Mulching leaves can improve lawns and reduce the environmental footprint associated with collection, hauling, and composting elsewhere. More information on this approach can be found here.
