2nd Suspect in Greenwich Fur Heist Is Caught

It was nearly a year ago that a man swiped more than $50,000 in furs from the Saks Fifth Avenue store on Greenwich Avenue.

A second suspect wanted for the brazen daytime theft of more than $50,000 worth of furs from the Saks Fifth Avenue store on Greenwich Avenue in November 2014 has been arrested.

The suspect, a Mount Vernon, NY man, was arrested Oct. 26 by Greenwich Police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, according to a police report. The suspect, identified as Maurice J. White, 42, was arrested at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, NY.

It was on Thanksgiving Eve, Nov. 26, 2014, when a man grabbed seven fur jackets, a chinchilla vest and at least three rabbit fur vests valued at more than $50,000 and ran from the 205 Greenwich Ave. store and jumped into a waiting black Dodge Charger, police said at the time.

A witness who happened to be in the parking lot gave police a description of the vehicle which was broadcast to area police agencies. About 15 minutes after the 11:15 a.m. theft, New York State Police spotted the Charger on I-95 and conducted a felony stop. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver fled on foot and was caught a short distance away. The passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off, leading state troopers on a chase that ended at Exit 16 in New Rochelle when the cars collided, police have said. After the crash, the driver, White, fled on foot.

Details on why he was in custody in Nassau County were not immediately available.

White is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear Nov. 4 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
