A 'Book Bowl' for Greenwich Library

The library has challenged Darien Library to a friendly month-long fundraising competition.

Greenwich Library has challenged the Darien Library to their first-ever Book Bowl. The friendly month-long fundraising competition was launched today — #GivingTuesday, and concludes Dec. 31.

With the two towns competing to raise the most funds for their respective libraries, the campaign has the competitive spirit of a sporting event. And in that competitive spirit of a bowl game, the losing library will host a tailgate party at the winning library for staff and volunteers.

“Like the Library, the Book Bowl will connect our entire community,” Haley Elmlinger, President of Greenwich Library Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “Whether you’re a young child who attends Saturday science programs, a teen who prepares for exams in the Jewel, an entrepreneur who uses the extensive business databases, or an older adult who enjoys the conversation and companionship of a Book Club; everyone who enjoys the Library can participate in the Book Bowl. All donations are welcome.”

The towns of Greenwich and Darien fund their libraries’ annual operating budgets. Greenwich Library depends on the support of private donors to enhance and develop new programs and services for the public, and in Darien Library’s case, all books, DVDs, databases, technology and programs are paid for solely by private donations. The funds raised during the month-long Book Bowl will benefit each library’s Annual Appeal.

“Darien and Greenwich both enjoy top national rankings due to the quality of their staffs and the innovative materials, programs and services made possible by the support of their private donors,” Tad Smith, President of the Darien Library Board of Trustees, said in a statement. “Darien is always up for a competition with Greenwich, whether it be on the sports field or a Book Bowl. Bring it on.”

Elmlinger added, “Spread the word to your friends and neighbors and ask local businesses do their part. Everyone likes a bit of competition, particularly when it’s for a great cause!”
