In 2025-26, the seasonal and higher dose influenza vaccines contain three (trivalent) influenza virus strains: one updated Influenza A-like (H3N2) virus, one updated Influenza A-like (H1N1) virus and one Influenza B-like virus, the health department said in a news release.

Both the seasonal trivalent influenza vaccine and the trivalent adjuvanted vaccine for people 65 years of age and older will be offered by the department.

The viruses in the flu shot are not live, so recipients cannot get the flu from a flu shot, the department said. However, the vaccine can trigger an immune response in the body, so a few mild symptoms, like achy muscles or a low grade fever, might be present.

"Getting your annual flu vaccine is the best, most effective thing you can do to keep from getting the flu, and from spreading it to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers," Greenwich Health Director Caroline C. Baisley said in a news release. "Due to declining immune systems with aging and possible chronic conditions, many adults age 65 and older are at greater risk of severe complication from influenza. If you are at high risk, get a flu vaccine this year."
