Greenwich Math Teacher Placed On Leave After Discovery Of Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Out Of NY

A math teacher was placed on leave this week after Greenwich Public Schools became aware of a sexual abuse lawsuit filed in New York.

GREENWICH, CT — A Greenwich High School math teacher has been placed on leave after the school district was notified of a sexual abuse lawsuit filed against him out of New York by a former student.

Greenwich Public Schools was notified on Wednesday about the lawsuit filed against Joseph Perlman, according to GPS spokesperson Jonathan Supranowitz. The lawsuit was filed in Westchester County Supreme Court in September.

"Joseph Perlman has been employed by GPS as a mathematics teacher at Greenwich High School since August 2023," Supranowitz confirmed with Patch via email Friday morning. "Mr. Perlman is currently on leave."

According to the lawsuit, Perlman is accused of "grooming" a 13-year-old student who was in his class during the 2018-2019 school year at Rye Neck Middle School.

Mamaroneck police eventually launched an investigation into allegations against Perlman beginning in November 2019, the department told Patch on Friday.

"Upon completion of the investigation, conducted by the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department, in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office, and the District Attorney investigators, no evidence was found to corroborate any of the allegations made against Mr. Perlman," police said. "The case is now closed and no crime was committed."

Patch reached out to Perlman on Friday for comment but did not immediately hear back.
