Greenwich Boys and Girls Club to Host 11th Annual Swim-a-Thon

Swimmers hope to raise $20,000 for the club's aquatics program.

Kids of all ages, families and Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich supporters will join together at the Clubhouse pool for fun and fundraising for the 11th annual Swim-A-Thon on Feb. 20.

Swimmers who have collected pledges per lap, will make a splash with lap swimming from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday in the clubhouse pool at 4 Horseneck Ln.

The club is inviting Greenwich residents to support the participants in this year’s Swim-A-Thon. Special guest Greenwich Police Lt. Rick Cochran has challenged himself to swim for this worthy cause. “I plan on swimming all four hours and my goal is to do 4 miles, that’s 64 laps each mile. I would like to raise $1,000 for the kids,” Cochran said.

BGCG swimmers are accepting pledges from the community to help reach this year’s goal of $20,000. The money raised during the Swim-A-Thon will support the club’s aquatic programs, ranging from staff to equipment and provide programs for its members. With a yearly membership of $50, members can join the swim team and participate in special clinics including swimming lessons, snorkeling, water polo and water safety instruction.

Club officials said the funds are essential this year because the pool heater recently caught fire and subsequently caused the pool’s closure to the community for two weeks.

Camryn Ferrara, the club’s athletic coordinator and Brendan Garnett, BGCG’s education/technology coordinator, have set up a friendly competition to see who can complete laps the fastest.
