UPDATE: Glenville Office Building Temporarily Evacuated
An unknown substance in the air caused eye irritation to some workers, prompting a temporary evacuation of offices at The Mill.
Update: 1:48 p.m.
Greenwich firefighters remained at the office complex at 340 Pemberwick Rd. Tueday afternoon trying to determine what caused the evacuation of the building after employees complained of eye irritation.
Greenwich Assistant Robert Kick said, “There was some type of irritant in the air. There were no injuries. We are trying to find the source of the irritant. It may be that someone accidentally activated mace or pepper spray in their pocket or purse.”

Two people complained of eye irritation that dissipated after they were brought outdoors, Kick said. No one required hospital treatment, he said.
Firefighters ventilated the building before allowing employees back into the second and third floors of the complex known as The Mill. At 1:45 p.m., employees of the first floor were still waiting for firefighters to complete ventilation before being allowed back inside, Kick said.

According to its website, The Richman Group of Companies occupies the office space of the converted felt factory on the Byram River.
Contrary to early reports of people fainting or a possible construction accident, Kick said, “It really was not a major incident. There isn’t any construction there.”

Greenwich Fire and Greenwich Emergency Medical Service reportedly are on the scene of an incident at The Mill complex at 340 Pemberwick Rd. on Tuesday afternoon.
There is one unofficial report of “people passing out” and some with “reported eye irritations.”
The Greenwich Emergency Dispatch Center advised in on Twitter about 12:43 p.m., “Pemberwick Road between Buena Vista (Drive) and Glenville Road is closed due to GFD activity. Traffic in Glenville center will be impacted.”
The Mill is a former felt mill that has been converted into office, restaurant and retail space.
