Greenwich Grocery Store To Close, Dozens Of Employees Impacted

The company announced the impending closure of the store after about 10 years in business.

GREENWICH, CT — The Acme Market located at 160 W. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich is slated to close this fall, affecting dozens of employees, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notice that was issued on Aug. 4.

The store will close on or about Oct. 9. The 56 associates currently employed at the store will be offered positions at another location, the WARN notice says, noting the exact placement of positions has not yet been completed. Associates will continue to work at the store to close operations for a period of time after the closing date.

"Like all retailers, we are constantly evaluating our store footprint and have to look at every angle of the business. This includes our real estate portfolio," said Dana Ward, Acme's Northeast director of communications and public affairs, in an emailed statement to Patch on Thursday.

"Closing a store is always a tough decision. Our [focus] remains on growing our business, which sometimes involves reinvesting resources into existing stores and exploring potential new locations," Ward added. "We look forward to continuing to provide our customers with clean, fresh, full, and friendly shopping experiences. Associates who are interested in remaining with the company will have the opportunity to be reassigned to open positions at nearby stores."

First Selectman Fred Camillo told Patch he's already making calls to gauge interest on the location.

He mentioned other grocery stores, like ShopRite, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, as establishments that are popular and thriving.

"They have reasonable prices, they have a growing organic selection of foods, which is very important to a lot of people. It's just a good atmosphere in those stores," he said. "I think a similar type store could thrive in that section."

Camillo noted he's gone through this before. He referred to the Stop & Shop that closed at 11 Glen Ridge Road in 2023. A DeCicco & Sons is set to open there in the coming months.

"I talked to various individuals about a store, and what type of store may succeed there," Camillo said. "I can't mention names, but I'm trying to see what the interest would be, and putting people in touch with people who are in charge there."

The Acme Market at 160 W. Putnam Ave. was formerly an A&P Fresh store. The store opened under Acme management in 2015.
