Greenwich High School Performs Spring Band Concert

From Greenwich HS: Celebrate Spring with an evening of delightful music that will undoubtedly warm your heart and lighten your mood.

Performances by Greenwich High School’s Percussion and Wind Ensembles and Concert and Symphony Bands under the direction of John S. Yoon, Director of Bands and Ben Walker, Associate Director of Bands, will take place.

The evening will begin when the Percussion Ensemble takes the stage and opens the concert with their performance of “Rapid Transit” by Chris Brooks.

The forward momentum and groove is the backbone of this piece. Next will be their performance of Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long (All Night)” Arr. by John R. Hearnes.
This very familiar 80s piece is sure to have the audience dancing in their seats. The Concert Band will then perform three inspirational pieces. “Festivo” by Vaclav Nelhybel, “Mazama” by Jay Chattaway and “Creed” by William Himes.

When the Symphony Band takes the stage to perform, they will begin with “Brighton Beach March” by William P. Latham. This piece has dynamic contrasts combined with woodwinds to unite in this solid concert march.

They follow up with “Sang!” by Dana Wilson and“Festival in Russia”, Polonaise, Op. 49 by Anatoli Liadov, Arr. by Don Wilcox

While the GHS Band pauses for intermission please visit the refreshment stand All proceeds support the band program and future trips where the student performers have the opportunity to compete with various high school bands.

The evening will conclude with the Wind Ensemble, which will first perform Variations on “America” by Charles Ives, Trans. William E. Rhoads.

This familiar piece combines patriotism and playfulness and is a sure crowd pleaser. Next will be “Suite Francaise” by Darius Milhaud (1. Normandie, 2. Bretagne, 3. Ile de France,4. Alsace-Lorraine, 5. Provence) They will end the evening with two final pieces:

• “Nimrod” by Edward Elgar, Arr. Alfred Reed and
• “Suspiros de Espana” by A. Alvarez, Ed. Charles A. Wiley.

The evening will be full of upbeat pieces that guarantee to have the audience walk away with smiles on their faces. We hope you will come to enjoy the Band’s Spring Concert at the GHS Performing Art Center.
