Greenwich To Mark 84th Anniversary Of Pearl Harbor With Ceremony: Details

"We must remember days like these as tribute to our veterans," First Selectman Fred Camillo said.

GREENWICH, CT — The Town of Greenwich will mark the 84th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks with a ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 7.

First Selectman Fred Camillo said in his weekly newsletter Friday the American Legion Post 29 will lead a ceremony at 1 p.m. at the war memorial on Greenwich Avenue near the Havemeyer building.

"All are encouraged to come out and pay respects to those who were lost on that terrible day as well as salute the service of all the brave members of the Greatest Generation who fought against the forces of evil in both Europe and the Pacific," Camillo noted. "We must remember days like these as tribute to our veterans so I hope there will be a big crowd for this event."

The surprise attack by Japan on the Pearl Harbor U.S. naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii, destroyed or damaged nearly 20 American naval vessels.

More than 2,400 Americans died as a result of the attacks, which were carried out by hundreds of Japanese fighter planes. The United States entered World War II shortly after.

In his speech to Congress on Dec. 8, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt called Dec. 7, 1941, "a date which will live in infamy."
