Popular Taco Restaurant Chain Approved To Open In Greenwich

The Greenwich restaurant would represent the seventh location for the brand.

GREENWICH, CT — Plans for a popular taco restaurant chain to open in downtown Greenwich have been approved by the town's Planning & Zoning Commission.

The Taco Project, which has a location in Stamford to go along with outposts in Westchester County in Bronxville, New Rochelle, Pleasantville, Tarrytown and Yonkers, has been approved to open at 91 Railroad Ave., the former site of Greenwich Cigar & Stationery for many years.

Commissioners during the Dec. 9 regularly scheduled meeting approved a final site plan and special permit to convert the 1,440-square-foot retail space into a 20-seat restaurant with a kitchen, prep and storage areas.

Thomas Heagney, an attorney for the applicant, told the commission that seating in the restaurant was reduced from 22 in the original plans to 20 "to provide for better circulation within the dining area."

The retail use demanded seven parking spaces, and a 20-seat restaurant needed eight. Heagney explained that through a leasing agreement, an additional space was secured behind the building.

The menu at The Taco Project features a variety of tacos served on yellow corn tortillas. There are burritos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, smaller starter dishes to share, salads and desserts. The Greenwich location will open with a liquor license.

Brunch offerings include avocado toast, waffles, breakfast burritos, flatbreads, nachos and bottomless cocktails.

"It’s our promise to deliver foods of the highest quality from the freshest ingredients at reasonable prices. We are committed to delivering a casual dining experience that will consistently exceed your expectations from a highly trained and motivated staff practicing their trade in a positive environment," The Taco Project notes on its website.

"The Taco Project was created for you and it is our sole mission to execute our core values in every element of the business!"

It's unclear when the restaurant will open. The area around 91 Railroad Ave. is undergoing a transformative change with the Greenwich Crossing revitalization project that will bring a new restaurant, a redesigned train station and renovated retail spaces to the Railroad Avenue corridor.

In an update last month, First Selectman Fred Camillo said that barring any unforeseen construction or weather delays, the train station is on track to reopen by the end of December.

Camillo also said renovations of the retail area were progressing.
