Greenwich Recognized As 'StormReady' By National Weather Service

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich was recently designated as "StormReady" community by the National Weather Service, town officials announced.

An official recognition ceremony for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Emergency Operations Center, on the 3rd Floor of the Greenwich Police Department.

"This significant designation underscores the town’s commitment to preparing for severe weather and enhancing public safety in the face of increasingly extreme weather events," said Joseph Laucella, the town's Emergency Management Director.

The StormReady program is designed to help communities like Greenwich improve their emergency preparedness through advanced planning, education, and effective communication strategies. With 98 percent of all Presidentially declared disasters linked to weather events, the need for proactive measures has never been more critical. The StormReady initiative empowers communities to save lives and protect property through collaboration and training.

This past summer representatives from the National Weather Service, FEMA, and the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management conducted a thorough review and site visit to evaluate Greenwich’s emergency preparedness efforts. After careful assessment, they confirmed that the town meets the criteria necessary for StormReady recognition.
