Greenwich Resident Aims To Increase Access To Tennis For Children Abroad And At Home
An upcoming charity tennis tournament will benefit aspiring players in developing countries and underserved communities here at home.
GREENWICH, CT — A Greenwich resident looking to increase access to tennis for children in developing countries and underserved communities has organized a charity tennis tournament that's slated to take place on Sept. 13-14 at Greenwich Country Club.
"I was born and raised in a central asian country where no matter how hard working and motivated children are, opportunities are very limited," Alla Kravchuk, a native of Uzbekistan, told Patch this week.
Kravchuk said her mother worked two jobs in order to pay for tennis lessons. Through persistence and with a little help from others, Kravchuk was eventually able to play Division I tennis at a university in America.

"I know not everyone is so lucky, and I'd like to help some kids just to make their journey a little less difficult," Kravchuk said.
At least 32 players from Fairfield and Westchester counties -- 16 men and 16 women -- are expected to participate in the "Advantage, Youth" charity tournament, with men playing on Saturday, Sept. 13, and women on Sunday, Sept. 14, from around 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

The tournament format is singles, "Fast Four" Round Robin, with a knockout stage. The format offers more playing time and opportunities to showcase skills by ensuring that each player competes against everyone.
"Local families, businesses, and donors will come together for a fun weekend of tennis, community and philanthropy," Kravchuk said. "The proceeds from the fundraiser will help provide equipment and financial assistance to aspiring tennis players, not just in developing countries, but also in underserved communities in our region."
Winners will receive $500 gift certificates from Elivate Med Spa and Wellness, a local sponsor. Kravchuk said she has partnered with Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich and men’s apparel brand Criquet for the event. Criquet will provide tennis polos to all players.
Any age and skill levels are welcome.
