GREENWICH, CT — Outgoing Democratic Selectperson Janet Stone McGuigan was honored Tuesday by her colleagues, as the current iteration of the Board of Selectmen held its final meeting before a new term begins on Dec. 1.

Stone McGuigan chose not to run for re-election in November, but she was elected to serve on the Representative Town Meeting, the town's legislative body. She will also continue on as the co-chair for the Greenwich Sustainability Committee.

Rachel Khanna, a Democrat, ran for a selectman seat and earned the third and final spot behind First Selectman Fred Camillo and Selectwoman Lauren Rabin, both Republicans.

At the end of Tuesday's meeting, Camillo issued a surprise proclamation declaring Nov. 25, 2025, as Janet Stone McGuigan Day in the town of Greenwich in honor of her service to the town.

"Janet Stone McGuigan has been a distinguished member of the Board of Selectmen for the past four years, having been elected in 2021 and then re-elected in 2023, serving honorably with a true sense of community service and dedication to Greenwich," Camillo said, reading from the proclamation.

"During her tenure on the Board of Selectmen, Janet has been an advocate for transparency, careful and public deliberation of important matters, famously pushing for second reads while always having a friendly smile and cheerful demeanor, which we all know," Camillo added.

Her colleagues often called her Janet "Second Read" Stone McGuigan for her commitment to holding two "reads" for an agenda item to allow more time for debate and feedback on a particular issue.

Other selectman duties for Stone McGuigan included being a board liaison to the Energy Management Advisory Committee, Harbor Management Commission and the Old Greenwich and Julian Curtiss School Building Committees.

Stone McGuigan moved to Greenwich with her family in 2006 and became involved in town government and public service, notably with the RTM, the boards of the League of Women Voters, the PTA Council, Barbara's House, and the Junior League.

Her professional experience includes working on environmental policy research for Resources for the Future, and on the mediation of federal regulatory negotiations for Resolve: Center for Dispute Resolution in Washington, DC, and writing white papers for the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, according to her official town bio.

Camillo said Stone McGuigan will be "much-missed on this board," and he wished her and her family all the best going forward.

Stone McGuigan, who was also given flowers and a card, said she was "honored, humbled and touched" by the recognition.

At the beginning of the meeting during her updates, Stone McGuigan spoke about her time on the board and what's next for her.

"Change is good. I leave this office feeling inspired and optimistic for our town's future," she said, congratulating Camillo and Rabin on their re-elections, and looking forward to serving on the RTM with her son, James.

"You can always count on me to be the adult in the room, and that will never change. Temperament is everything in public office, and a spirit of respectable collegiality is essential even when we disagree, and open debate does not diminish but indeed nurture democracy," Stone McGuigan added.

"I will continue to champion our youth and seniors, and everyone in between. Whatever role I'm in, I want to be a contributing member of a welcoming and inclusive Greenwich community. Thank you for your partnership on this journey."
