Teacher Position Cuts Included In Proposed Operating Budget For Greenwich Public Schools
Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones presented her proposed 2026-2027 operating budget last week

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones presented her proposed 2026-2027 operating budget last week, and included in the spending plan is a reduction of 11.5 full-time equivalent positions.
Overall, Jones's proposed operating budget is $207,178,854, a $6.2 million increase - or 3.13 percent - over the FY26 budget.
The proposed budget is $232,255 below Board of Estimate and Taxation's nonbinding budget guidelines, which called for no more than a 3.25 percent increase.

Two key challenges this year, Jones said, are contractual salaries ($5.20 million increase) and transportation costs ($2.35 million increase).
In order to find efficiencies, Jones noted 6.5 full-time equivalent positions would be removed from Greenwich High School, four would be removed from Central Middle School, and an administrative position at GHS would be cut - giving the district $1.31 million in savings.

The position cuts are based on enrollment, Jones said.
Other proposed reductions include decreasing the summer school program by $500,000, slashing $150,000 from utilities, and reductions in accumulated vacation/sick days and print shop supplies.
The reductions total $2,085,563, according to Jones.
"This funds minimal new investments, and not because we didn't just want to put something in the budget. It's because we didn't need it. We have built our programs," Jones said of the proposed operating budget. "It adjusts for declining enrollment that is just now starting to move through middle school and high school, and we've seen it at elementary level in the last five to seven years... It also funds the curriculum management plan to keep us on pace for excellence."
The Board of Education approved the FY27 capital budget request on Oct. 23 for $17,823,000. Major projects include Julian Curtiss renovations and GHS Pool Design Funds. Hamilton Avenue HVAC will be an interim funding request in December 2025.
A Greenwich Board of Education budget meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11 at Central Middle School, followed by a regular business meeting on Thursday, Dec. 18, also at CMS.
Town and district officials will present their proposed budgets to the BET in January at Town Hall before budget season really kicks into full gear in February.
