Witnesses in the area Tuesday morning reported hearing what they believed was a gunshot, the Greenwich Police Department said in a news release.
"At this time, the incident appears to be an isolated case of vehicle theft. There is no indication of a broader threat to the community," the GPD said.
At approximately 4:55 a.m., officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle theft on the west side of town; police did not specify exactly where.
Police described the victim's injuries as "non-life-threatening," and that they are "consistent with shrapnel from a discharged firearm," but no direct gunshot wound was identified, police added.
The stolen vehicle was later recovered in Bridgeport by police there, the GPD said, adding a bullet casing was discovered inside.
"This is an on-going, dynamic investigation, and the Greenwich Police Department will provide updates as appropriate," police said.
