About 100 people are expected to run into Fisher’s Island Sound at noon on Jan. 1 for the 12th Annual Samaritan Swim at Eastern Point Beach in Groton.
The event raised nearly $8,000 last year for Malta, a non-profit group that provides food, clothing and transitional housing to hungry and homeless people in Eastern Connecticut. The group is a faith-based organization and also offers spiritual guidance. It relies on private donations and does not receive federal money.
The Samaritan Swim is Malta’s single largest fundraising event, according to the group’s website.
