Breezy, with a west wind between 18 and 23 mph.
2. Town offices and schools are closed today in observance of the holiday. Government offices reopen at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
3. has notified Groton it will lay off 41 people starting March 9. The employees include 30 carpenters, another employees and 10 sheet metal workers represented by the Metal Trades Council of New London County. and temporarily layoff fewer than 200 yard workers at its Groton facility. Casey said the yard workers would be brought back – and possibly more hires added – when submarine maintenance and modification work picks up after the summer.

4. The Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Connecticut is accepting applications until 4 p.m. Jan. 17 for its 62nd Citizen of the Year award. The honor recognizes someone for making an outstanding contribution to the civic and business community. It does not consider anyone who was paid to perform services they were nominated for. The annual award is presented in the spring 2012.
5. in Groton City is taking registrations for Toddler Time, a story program for children ages 18 months to 36 months. The program is held at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays starting Jan. 23 until March 12. To register, stop at the library or call (860) 445-0392.
