Daily Five: Town Employees Donate $20,000 To United Way

1. Today is Monday, Dec. 19. The National Weather Service predicts mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 45 degrees and a southwest wind of 8 to 11 mph, increasing to 20 to 23 mph. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with a low of 34.
2. One hundred five town employees donated $20,135 to United Way this year. While some departments gave less than last year, others gave more. The police department had 25 employees donate, up from 19 last year. Librarian Sue Palmieri organized the campaign.
3. The law firm of Suisman, Shapiro, Wool, Brennan, Gray and Greenberg, PC gave $2,000 to help the Department of Human Services provide fuel assistance. The state’s energy assistance program was cut this year by the federal government; families that received $600 to $800 will get $250 this year, according to a report by the town manager.

4. Children’s programs at Groton Public Library did well this past month. The library reported 101 attended the Babies and Books program, 303 attended Toddler Time, and 237 participated in Preschool Stories.
5. Second graders from Mary Morrisson Elementary will be reaching out to neighbors this year. The students will travel to the Fairview Odd Fellows Home on Tuesday morning to sing and spend some time with the elderly residents.
