Five Things to Know Monday, Nov. 14

1. Today is Monday, Nov. 14. The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies, a slight chance of showers this afternoon and a high temperature of 61 degrees. The low will fall to 52 degrees tonight.
2. The Groton Human Services Department is collecting toys for its 2011 Christmas program. The program provides toys for children up to age 12, and gift cards for teenagers. The wish list includes books, Legos, arts and crafts, Nerf toys, princess toys, blocks and Walmart gift cards. Unwrapped toys may be dropped off at the human services office at 2 Fort Hill Road by Dec. 12.
3. The Town Council will discuss the Fitch High School baseball field improvements during the council's committee of the whole meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Town Hall Annex. Superintendent Paul Kadri and School Board Chairman Brian Shirvell are expected to attend. Some councilors have said they are upset because the field cost $140,000 more than an anonymous donor provided, yet they were not informed until after the project was done.

4. The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development is holding an informational session in Groton about the state's new business initiatives. The session, which will outline new programs and initiatives rom the recent jobs bill, will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Dec. 5 at the Groton Inn & Suites. The business measures provide $180 million to create new jobs and build existing small companies. 5. Bill Memorial Library its fall Toddler Time, a program of stories and songs for children ages 18 to 36 months and their caregivers, at 10:30 a.m. today.
