Groton Town Council Approves Police Substation

The substation will be added to a building being converted from a hotel into apartments.

GROTON, CT — The Groton Town Council unanimously approved a measure to establish a police substation at its Tuesday meeting.

The substation will lease space at 99 Gold Star Highway, where the owner of the property is renovating a former Groton Motor Inn into apartments.

The council approved a lease of the 1,366-square-foot space which will be offered for 10 years for an annual cost of $100.

GoodHomes Communities, the company converting the former hotel into 115 apartments, approach the police department about placing a substation there, The Day of New London reported.

The substation will include a full bathroom with shower, six personal storage lockers, and four parking spaces. The police department will have 24-hour access to the substation, but it will not be staffed 24-7.

"The interest of 99 Gold Star Highway Owner LLC is to provide a better connection between neighboring residents, the Police Department, and the community as a whole," according to the agenda packet.

The substation would provide residents with "better accessibility to patrol officers, while also providing a location for community policing officers to establish hours to meet with residents in that area of town."

Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro Jr. said he thinks the substation will benefit the residents and the community while acting as a deterrent to crime, The Day reported.

No additional budget appropriations are anticipated to fund the facility.
