Photo Gallery: Restoring The Last Wooden Whale Ship

Museum Gives Retired Ship A New Lease On Life

From Oct. 28 through Nov. 5, the will celebrate the of one of the last, but not final, trips made by the Charles W. Morgan, the last remaining wooden whaling ship, which came to rest at the museum in 1941.

The ship was built and launched from New Bedford, Mass. in July of 1841 and had an active career until it was retired in 1921. The Morgan made 37 voyages in its 80-year career. The museum is gearing up for the ship's 38th voyage, which will take place in the summer of 2014 and will coincide with the ship's initial launch.

Since its acquisition, the ship has been preserved and restored to what it looked like during its whaling days from 1841 to 1921. The ship was taken out of the water for a three-year restoration project while remaining an active exhibit where visitors can learn about the ship, about whaling and about the restoration project.
