What Should Groton Do About Schools' Projected Shortfall? [VIDEO]
Closing a middle school is one option on the table to save money.
Groton school leaders face difficult decisions in the coming weeks and months, as they grapple with how to handle a projected shortfall of more than $3 million next fiscal year.
School Board Chairman if they try to keep all three middle schools open. Superintendent Paul Kadri estimated the shortfall more conservatively at $3.3 million.
One option under consideration by the board is closing a middle school. The to collect data about residents' main concerns about closing one of the schools. Data from the forums has been collected and will result in a survey shortly which will be available to all residents online and on paper before the December break.

Brianna Russomano, whose daughter attends Mary Morrisson Elementary, said she feels badly for the schools, the kids and the teachers if the money situation is that bad.
"Every year, I don't understand why there's this money problem. Three million, that's a big chunk of change," Russomano said. "And the poor teachers."

If Groton closes a school, she added, "they're losing their jobs, and they're divvying up the kids."
