After Hurricane Sandy's Wrath, Halloween Trick or Treating in Guilford Cautioned
Town assesses the risk of celebrating Halloween in Guilford in the wake of Sandy's wrath

Tuesday night, First Selectman Town Mazza said that while there is no official statement about Halloween being ‘cancelled,’ in Guilford, the town will most likely recommend that people do not partake in trick or treating today. “We’re not making any decisions until tomorrow morning,” said Mazza last night, “But we will most likely recommend to families that they do not participate in Halloween until next week.”
The decision for this recommendation is motivated by several safety concerns that still exist. Even though we have made it through Sandy the storm, the wake of Sandy has left the town still very much affected. “The amount of downed trees that are around town are a safety hazard we have a lot of concern about,” said Mazza. “What makes it worse is that many of those trees are down on power lines. With wind blowing, there is no way to guarantee that those areas are safe.”
“We will suggest that residents avoid these potentially hazardous conditions and hold off on their celebrations until next week,” he concluded.

The Police Department says to just use common sense, and to weigh the risks.
If you are looking for some Halloween Festivities in town, head to Bishop’s Orchard at 10 AM or 1 PM and carve a Jack-O-Lantern! All pumpkins that are carved on site for this event are free. Bishop’s asks that instead of purchasing a pumpkin, carvers make a donation to the Women and Family Life Center. The donations will supply funds to help clean up efforts and housing needs by needy families on the Shoreline. Halloween fun for a good cause!
