“We are thrilled that Target is interested in building out a store in Guilford,” First Selectman Matt Hoey said. “We are hopeful that they will come to terms with the Shoreline Plaza ownership group.”
Walmart closed its doors at its 900 Boston Post Road location in May 2022. At that time, a senior Walmart corporate officer said it was a “difficult decision to close” the store after a “thoughtful review process.”

After the design review committee meeting, Hoey said Target officials would present before the Planning and Zoning committee, as the design review is an advisory body to the P&Z commission.
Last month, T.J. Maxx scrapped their plans for moving into the empty space after the agency handling their signage pulled the application for the former Walmart location.
At that time, Hoey said he hoped they could get a business to replace Walmart because the store filled a need for a significant part of the Guilford community.
“Target would make for a wonderful addition to our community on so many levels,” Hoey said. “A quality retailer like Target will fulfill so many shopping needs for our community and eliminate or sharply reduce residents driving to other community to shop for essential goods.”
