"From our family to yours, thank you. This recognition means so much because it reflects the generations of hard work, love for the land, and the incredible support of our community who have shared in our harvests year after year," a post on Facebook said.
"We also want to tip our hats to all of the orchards who made this list. Farming is not easy—it’s long days, uncertain weather, and constant care," the post added. "But it’s also the joy of seeing families making memories and knowing we are nourishing our communities in every way we can. Being counted among such dedicated growers across the country is not missed on us."
Walter Goodrich Bishop started a general farm in Guilford in 1881, and his son, Burton Walter Bishop, helped to expand the business, according to the orchard's website.
The first commercial orchard was started at the property in 1909, and it was later incorporated and formally named after Burton, who died in 1942.
The retail farm market was expanded to be open year-round in the 1970s, and in 1974, the farm expanded by purchasing Tollgate Orchards in Northford, which consisted of 35 acres. This is now known as Bishop’s Orchards Northford Farm.
Current management of the farm is split between Keith and Jonathan Bishop, and several family members are still involved.
The Bishop families have roots in Guilford since the founding of the town by relatives from England in 1639.
Bishop's Orchards is currently holding its 2025 fall festival.
Running through Nov. 4, the festival features apple and pear picking, wagon rides, a pick-your-own flower field, and pumpkin picking.
