At the end of last week (aka monsoon season), it seemed inconceivable that we'd be able to start pick your own anytime soon.
But Bishop's has evaluated its fields and have announced that pick-your-own strawberries is scheduled to start Monday. Double check on their Facebook page or give them a call at (203) 453-2338 if you want to be sure, but as of Saturday, they were on for Monday.
Bishop's is located at 1355 Boston Post Road in Guilford, CT and, in addition to pick-your-own fields, they have a fabulous farm market that stocks everything from the mundane to the gourmet. The folks who work there are friendly and able to answer any questions you might have about what's in stock.
If you're going to go, you might want to try early rather than later. The current forecast is calling for the possibility of some thunderstorms in the afternoon on Monday. Check the latest forecast before you head out.
Here is information from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture about other pick-your-own options.
Connecticut Agriculture Commissioner Steven K. Reviczky is encouraging residents to enjoy this weekend’s sunny, warm, and dry weather by visiting a local farm to pick or purchase Connecticut Grown strawberries.
“Despite this week’s cool, rainy weather, the strawberry crop is still doing well and the weekend is shaping up to provide great picking weather,” said Commissioner Reviczky. “Berry picking is an ideal all-ages activity and wonderful way for the family to enjoy Father’s Day together. Those berries can be turned into Dad’s favorite dessert or simply enjoyed as is for a delicious, highly nutritious snack. ”

Strawberry season in Connecticut typically runs throughout the month of June. This year, cool weather delayed the start of the season, which means berries will still be plentiful in pick-your-own fields over the weekend. Some fields may still be damp on Saturday from the rain, so appropriate shoes or boots are recommended, as is calling ahead for specific picking hours and conditions.
