Ethan Song’s Parents File Lawsuit in Shooting Death of Son

The parents of the Guilford teen killed by a gunshot in January have filed a lawsuit against father who had gun in house where Ethan died.

GUILFORD, CT — The parents of the teenager who was killed by a gunshot in January have filed a multi-count, wrongful death lawsuit against the owners of the home in which their 15-year-old son was killed.

The suit has been filed by Kristin and Michael Song in Superior Court in New Haven on behalf of their son, Ethan.

Even though it is public record, Patch is not naming the other boy involved in the shooting - or his family as police have not named any suspects as part of their ongoing investigation.

The Songs in their suit say the house where Ethan and the other boy were in had a gun on the premises “unsafely stored and/or kept when he (the boy’s father) should have known that a minor was likely to gain access to the gun without the permission of his parent.”

The suit says that on January 31st, 2018, Ethan was on the premises of the house on Seaside Avenue and that the two boys “gained access to the loaded gun on the premises.”

The suit is claiming negligence on the part of the other boy’s father, stating, among other things, that the gun was not secured, was not properly stored, that the boy was not warned or instructed about gun safety, that he didn’t warn Ethan or his parents about the gun being on the premises.

The suit versus alleges recklessness against the other boy’s father, referring to “wanton and reckless misconduct.”

The suit concludes that because of the defendant’s actions “Ethan Song’s ability to pursue and enjoy’s life activities has been destroyed.”

The suit seeks in excess of $15,000 in monetary damages - and punitive damages.

The family of Ethan Song started up a "Ethan Song Acts of Kindness Page" on Facebook to ask people to commit an act of kindness in memory of the 15-year-old boy. It asks anyone who does an act of kindness in Ethan's memory to share the act on the page.

This Facebook page comes on the heels of a GoFundMe page that was started by Ethan's family which has, to date, raised well over $112,000 - more than 20 times the amount the family asked for originally - in support of the causes that Ethan's family said Ethan cared deeply about - namely animal rights, human rights, gun education and advocacy.
