Finding Supplies for Sandy in Guilford

As Hurricane Sandy approaches, Walmart, Big Y and CVS in Guilford prepare. Battery stock levels are low across the board and seem to be in highest demand.

Big Y, Walmart and CVS in Guilford have seen a steady flow of customers today as residents prepare for Hurricane Sandy. So how are supplies of batteries, water, bread and other essentials holding up?

Big Y seems to be in good shape. "We did a great job last year," says Grocery Sales Manager Steve. "And we took that same plan and used it for this year. We've got a generator all set, just in case."

"Stock levels are holding up. The battery situation is a little tight, but we are continually being stocked with water and other supplies. As soon as we put it out though, it goes flying off the shelf."

Steve also notes that people are shopping a bit different this year than for the storms of last year. "Residents have been more proactive this year, so we've seen more of a steady flow of customers, versus the frenzy we witnessed last year," he says. "There also shopping for other essentials they've learned they want, like peanut butter and jelly."

At Walmart, flashlight batteries are almost completely gone. "We had an emergency truck deliver this morning carrying many essentials," says John Billings, Customer Service Manager. "And another one will be coming in this evening, and that is supposed to have batteries on it."

"We're also low on some other food items, like bread," he says. But they are preparing for the storm in other ways as well. "Either tonight or tomorrow morning we'll be setting up plywood for protection from wind and water. We're also bringing in all our carts for safety."

Over at CVS, the water stock seems solid, but batteries, as in the other stores, are very low.
